WHO WE ARE
Diversity in Dentistry Mentorships is a use 501(C)(3) NONPROFIT EDUCATIONAL ORGANIZATION committed to strengthen the diversity pipeline from middle school to dental school through mentoring, educational and hands-on programming, and scholarships to youth and pre-dental students from African-American/Black, Latinx, and Native American backgrounds.
We aim to reach our youth early to learn how rewarding a career in dentistry is and that it can be an attainable goal. Working with our mentors throughout their educational journey will increase the dental school applicant pool of diverse, strong candidates. It is our hope this will increase the acceptance rate of historically underrepresented minority students (HURM) into dental school. Increasing the diversity in dentistry will positively impact both the lives of the dentists and the communities they serve, improving the overall delivery of equitable oral health care to everyone.
THE PROBLEMRacial diversity among dentists does not mirror that of the U.S. population.
In the latest report from the Health Policy Institute, of all U.S. dentists, only 3.8% are Black, 5.2% are Hispanic and 1.1% totaled American Indian, Alaska Native, and Pacific Islanders. In 2018 only 16% of enrollees in dental schools were underrepresented minorities.
Why is this a problem?
Studies have shown a lack of diversity in medicine leads to poor cultural competency amongst health care providers. Lack of cultural competence leads to ineffective communication, bias, and ultimately results in inequity in the delivery of healthcare including oral health to minorities that ultimately leads to poor health outcomes.
Our vision is for the faces of dentistry to reflect that of our Nation’s ever-increasing diversity.
Our mission is to lengthen and strengthen the pipeline from middle school to dental school for underrepresented minority students, to discover dentistry and broaden the diversity of the applicant pool to dental school. Our work will build up diverse leaders in dentistry through education, empowerment, and mentorship.
Increasing the diversity in dentistry will positively impact both the lives of the dentists and the communities they serve, improving the overall delivery of equitable oral health care to everyone.
